We all heard stories as children and as soon as someone begins to tell you story, it invokes a memory of a cozy childhood, and sends a message to your unconscious mind that says, “It’s story time. Snuggle up in your blanket and break out the milk and cookies!”

You see, hearing a story is anchored to that sense of warmth, safety and possibility we experience as children and when you hear a story, it sends a message to your neurology that says: “Sit back, relax, and enjoy this ride all the way to the end.”

What Does A Canary Have To Do With Computers?

When you stop to think about it, you’ll realise that metaphors are all around you. In fact, as I explored the subject more deeply, I discovered that metaphors are part of the structure of how every human being thinks… but that’s another story.

You see, as I started to explore the incredible power of stories and metaphors, I also began to discover the amazing things you can do with them.

Back in 1996, I started reading my first book about NLP and Hypnosis. I found the ideas and concepts fascinating, and immediately started looking for practical ways to use them in my work and elsewhere in my life.

At the time, I was working as a project manager, running multi-million pound organisational change programmes and putting in 80 hours or more a week. As a colleague used to say, “I was busier than a one-armed wallpaper hanger.”

Metaphor seemed to have it.

Now, the first time I deliberately used a metaphor to create a certain effect was when we’d just launched a business critical global computer system, and a part of the processing was crashing on a nightly basis. The IT Director called me into his office, and demanded to know what was wrong with the piece of processing.

I explained, “The process is in place to ensure that all the thousands of transactions we deal with each day are correctly balanced before posting them to the general ledger.”

He looked at me blankly, then asked again what was wrong with it.

Analytical explanation had been of no use.

So I said, “There’s nothing wrong with it – it’s like the coalminer’s canary.”

“Oh, I see. Well that’s different” he said, and relaxed visibly. “How long will it be before everything’s OK?”

In case you were wondering…

Coalminers used to take a canary down into the coal mine with them. If the canary died, the coalminers knew there was gas in the mine, and they had to get out. He understood the metaphor instantly, and we were able to move on.

I was absolutely amazed! What looked like it was going to be a tedious, hour long grilling by the IT Director ended up being resolved easily in only a few minutes.

I said to myself, there and then…

“You have to do whatever it takes to become a master of metaphor.”

The technique I used is called reframing, where you use metaphors to change the meaning of something instantly in someone’s mind.

By the way…

In NLP terms, I use the term metaphor ‘loosely’ to cover many things including Metaphors, Similes, Stories, Anecdotes, Tall tales, Factual explanations, and even Jokes!

A university lecturer would probably have words with me over definitions, but I think it’s more important to be able to do this stuff than it is to use the precise, theoretical, grammatical definitions.

Here’s what Steven Heller, Ph.D (top hypnotherapist) said in his superb book “Monsters & Magical Sticks: There’s No Such Thing As Hypnosis”:

It seems that Milton H Erickson MD (aka “The Miracle Worker”) had a similar view, and pioneered the use of metaphor in hypnosis. Any analysis of the ‘greats’ of NLP will show extensive use of metaphor throughout their work.
