When I first heard about t extraordinary mastery of language. While I already knew there was power in language, I was absolutely amazed by what it’s possible to do when you develop your linguistic skills. I made a promise to myself: I said “Whatever you do, you have to become skilled with language.”

Here are some of the things that really blew my mind, and that I wanted to have for myself:

• Being able to develop rapport (the ‘trust me’ state) within moments, with individuals or groups, just by using a few well chosen phrases or sentences.
   
• Getting people to go into trance in the course of a seemingly ordinary conversation.
   
• Using a few words to unblock someone who’s in a stuck state and help them move forward.
   
• Being able to instantly recognize peoples’ sensory systems and tune in to them immediately to get a deep sense of rapport.
   
• Learn to use hypnotic language as a natural and seamless aspect of my communications to guide people in the direction I want them to go.
   
• Most of all, I wanted to be able to do this fluently and elegantly, without having to think about it.

As it happens, many of the world’s most successful people are unusually skilled with language. Coincidence? I don’t think so. Your ability to communicate exquisitely has a direct relationship to a number of things, including:

As you may already be aware, my inspiration for Salad’s Ericksonian Hypnosis Cards came from a card deck called Zebu. What you may not know is that I owned my Zebu cards for a whole year before I actually took them out and started using them to systematically increase my language skills.

Why? My conscious mind reason was (don’t laugh!) that I didn’t have anyone else to play with. In reality, it may have been the case that, like most people, I often have a pretty good idea of what needs to happen in order to get a massive improvement in skill, but (for whatever reason) I don’t always do it. Fortunately, I’d been doing a bunch of other things (like writing out hypnotic language patterns and trying them out at work), so when I finally got a group of people to practice with, I jumped in with both feet.

What I found was that, while I’d learned a lot from reading about hypnotic language and writing out the patterns, the learning increases exponentially when you do this stuff with other people.

It stands to reason.

Hypnotic language patterns are designed to communicate with your unconscious mind. In a way, they’re a tool for creating a meaningful communication between your unconscious and someone else’s unconscious mind.

As you begin to use the patterns with other people, your unconscious mind picks up feedback in real time. This means that your unconscious is learning, just by taking part. When I finally understood that this is how you really become skilled at something, I started to create contexts so I could experience the most rapid learning possible, both in the classroom and out in the field.

I love learning from books, and getting the concepts, but the reality is that a book can never give the deep unconscious learnings that build real skill. For that, you need experience.
