Hypnotic Language in Action - Part 3 - The Objection-Buster
This
week, we’re continuing to explore everyday applications of hypnotic language. I
was interviewed last night by the owner of a hugely successful business in the
USA. During the interview, we unpacked one of the most simple yet powerful
techniques there is for handling objections & concerns, whether you’re doing
everyday persuasion & influence, or more formal sales.
But
before we look at the pattern, I want to share a useful belief with you.
Objections are ‘buying
signals’
When someone raises an
objection or concern, it’s a sign that they want to accept your idea /
product / service / suggestion, but that there’s something that’s been
blocking them until now. The inexperienced influencer gets defensive when their
influencee raises a concern, but the experienced influencer sees it as a
positive sign.
So
bearing that in mind, let’s look at an example from my experience.
Influencee:
I’d like to buy your influence products, but they’re
too expensive.
Influencer:
I understand how you feel. I have a client who felt
the same way, but they found that the investment they made in
these products & in themselves was repaid many times over within a few weeks.
Let’s
take this section by section:

I understand how you feel. |
This does 3 powerful things:
1) it acknowledges the validity of the person’s concern, rather than
dismissing it or defending against it. This is pacing, meeting them at
their ‘map of the world’.
2) it lets them know “I understand” (everyone likes to be
understood)
3) it reframes the person’s concern from being a ‘statement about
reality’ to being ‘a feeling’. When you reframe something,
you subtly change its meaning, & feelings are not the same as facts.
How’s that for a one-liner!

This also does a number of powerful things:
4) It takes the focus off of the person’s objection, & starts telling
them a story (everyone loves stories).
5) This story is about someone who felt the same way as
them – the word ‘felt’ implies that their feeling changed in some way.
6) This further acknowledges the person’s map of reality, but starts to
lead them to a new possibility.
7) Best of all, in order to make sense of this story, the person needs
to relate it to their own experience…

But they found |
8) “But” is a powerful word. “But” negates what went before it – in this
case, the feeling / concern.
9) The story continues – as we discover what “they found”, the
process of forward movement continues.

10) The word “investment” reframes the cost implied by the word
“expensive” into an investment. And what do investments do? They give
you a return on your investment. Suddenly it’s not a cost – it’s
an investment in your future.
11) “the investment they made” – again, past tense. To make sense of it,
you imagine yourself having made the same kind of investment.
(remember, people won’t do anything until they first imagine doing
it!)

12) Now you’re not just investing in products; you’re investing in
yourself.

was repaid many times over within a few weeks.

13) Here’s the payoff. The investment was repaid, so all of a sudden, it
goes from having been perceived as a cost, to being a source of income!

This
pattern is called “Feel, felt, found”, & despite its simplicity, it’s one
of my favourite hypnotic patterns for dealing with objections & concerns.
However…
I suggest that you always use genuine examples for doing this, rather than
making them up. Why? Because if you’re fibbing, people will pick it up
unconsciously.
In the
example I’ve given, it’s a true story. One of our subscribers was employed as a
salesperson for a company that demanded extremely high levels of performance
from their staff. He was put on “performance management”, & was told that if he
didn’t hit his targets the following week, he would be fired.
He rang
up in a panic, & got us to send him a copy of our “Ethical Influence with NLP”
CDs, special delivery. He listened to them over the weekend, & he hit his
targets the following week for the first time ever!
Whenever
anyone gives me a price objection, I’m reminded of this person, & the enormous
effect it had on him, his work & his self-perception. He told me later that he
had thought about buying the products for some time, but it took the threat of
unemployment to spur him into action. Subsequently, he attended Salad trainings,
left the company for a job he enjoyed more, & has continued to invest in himself
& his own development. Good call!
I was
once teaching the “Feel, felt, found” technique on a course, & one of the
participants said “This wouldn’t work with my clients.” I smiled, & said this to
her.
“I
understand where you’re coming from. In fact, I had someone on a course a while
back who had exactly the same concern, but they discovered that once they’d put
it into practice & given themselves a chance to get comfortable with the
structure, their clients were just as receptive to this approach as anyone
else.”
She said
“Oh, OK, I’ll give it a go.” Everyone else in the class burst into laughter, as
they recognized me using exactly the same underlying pattern to address her
concern!
Of
course, the specific wording is entirely up to you, but “Feel, felt, found”
is a very easy way of remembering this incredibly powerful technique.
