Hypnotic Language in Action - Part 4 - How To Make an Ordinary Conversation
Hypnotic
This week,
we’re continuing to explore everyday applications of hypnotic language. One of
the things that has always fascinated me about NLP & hypnotic language is that,
when it’s done well, it doesn’t seem very different from everyday language, but
it has powerful effects. In this article, you’ll discover how to make an
“ordinary conversation” incredibly hypnotic.
When I
first started studying NLP, I was told “Analyse transcripts of people doing NLP
elegantly”. Armed with pen, paper & tape deck, I listened to audio after audio
of top trainers doing this stuff. I wrote it down, I analysed it, & I started to
detect patterns. So this week, I thought I’d share a transcript with you from
the intro of our Hypnotic Language Masterclass audios (if you

discover what’s going on).
Just to set
he scene, this clip is from 2½ minutes into a one-day training, where I’ve just
ascertained that everyone in the room has at least some experience of NLP or
hypnosis. Here’s what I said:
So you will all be to some extent aware of the things that
I’m doing with language…right from the outset…so I’ll have to be…given that you
all have a certain level of experience already…that means at least two
things…one of the things that it means…is that I’ll have to be…doubly crafty…if
I’m going to get anything…by you and straight into your unconscious…without your
conscious mind being aware of it…and the second thing is…of course the fact that
you’ve all got some experience already…some formal… experience of hypnosis…means
that you’ll be able to learn…even more…and even more quickly… today, as we
proceed, so that’s good…that’s good…and I know that…you’ve all… come here for
certain things…you’ve all got certain things in mind… that you want to get from
today…and some of those are going to be similar…amongst you…and some of them are
going to be very individual to you…but one of the things I always say…at the
beginning of a training is… “I’d like you to open your mind…to the
possibility…that you can get… not only what you came for… but more than you came
for…”
Let’s look
at this bit by bit

So
you will all be to some extent aware of the things that I’m doing with
language |
“to
some extent aware” presupposes that they will also be (to some extent)
unaware. But whether they’re aware of the things I’m doing with language
or not, it still presupposes that I’m “doing things”.
|
|
“so
I’ll have to be… given that…” |
“so
I’ll have to be” is a sentence fragment – causes mild confusion &
curiosity about how the sentence was going to end.
|
|
“given that you all have a certain level of experience already…” |
“A
certain level?” – how specific! And experience of what, specifically?
This is classic ‘artfully vague’ language, making it so everyone in the
room can match this with their own experience.

|
“that means at least two things…” |
A
means B – my favourite pattern for setting frames. In this case, the
fact that you have a certain level of experience means a) that I’ll have
to be doubly crafty - whatever that is - and b) that you’ll be
able to learn even more, even more quickly. No logician would stand for
this, but the unconscious mind does, which is all good!

“means that you’ll be able to learn…even more…and even more quickly…”
|
Even more than what? And even more quickly than what, for that matter?
Lots of lovely artful vagueness, which causes people to nod their way
into trance. By the way, for those of you who are alert to ambiguity,
the phrase “you’ll be able to learn… even more…and even more
quickly…” is very ambiguous & trancy. “Even more quickly” – is it
saying you’ll be able to learn this thing more quickly than before, or
is it saying that I’ll be able to learn more, and do it quickly? Or
both?

“so
that’s good” |
Presupposes that everything that preceded it is true! Just by saying “so
that’s good”. Isn’t that great?
|
|
“and I know that…you’ve all… come here for certain things… you’ve all
got certain things in mind… that you want to get from today…” |
First of all, how do I know that? Because it’s what’s called a truism.
No-one showed up because they wandered in off the street – they came for
a reason. Certain things? Sounds specific, but once again, it’s vague
enough for everyone in the room to agree with. As an aside, I love the
phrase “you’ve all got certain things in mind…” – it’s curiously
ambiguous or something.

“and some of those are going to be similar…amongst you…and some of them

Wow! Am I a psychic or what? Yet when you’re sitting listening to this
stuff, it sounds pretty compelling, or at least fairly easy to go along
with, wouldn’t you agree?
|
|
“but one of the things I always say…at the beginning of a training is…
“I’d like you to open your mind…to the possibility…that you can get… not
only what you came for… but more than you came for…”
|
Quotes, my favourite pattern ever – and who better to quote than myself?
It’s an opportunity to take my core message “I’d like you to open
your mind…to the possibility…that you can get… not only what you came
for… but more than you came for…”
By
the way, notice how I pause after “open your mind…” When you listen to
this section of audio, you’ll hear just how hypnotic it is.

Just so you
know, my reasons for using this kind of language at the beginning of the
Hypnotic Language Masterclass included:

into a trance (it was, after all, a hypnotic language course)

powerful learning & popping in some powerful messages for learning & expanding

proceeded (as well as the patterns I’ve detailed, there are also a variety of
cause-effect & linkage patterns in use)
In my
opinion, one of the key skills for doing elegant NLP is to demonstrate what
you’re teaching, both overtly & covertly. This is one small example of that.
By the way,
when I’m doing something like this, I’m not using my conscious mind to generate
the patterns. I’ve practiced hypnotic language enough that it’s become
unconscious. When I’m doing the stuff, I just set a goal, & let my unconscious
generate the patterns.
