Hypnotic Language in Action - Part 7 - How the World's Greatest Leaders Use Hypnotic Language

For the final tip in this series, I thought we’d take a look at how great leaders use hypnotic language to capture the imaginations of their audiences. Specifically, you’re going to discover some of the amazing things John F Kennedy did with hypnotic language in his famous “Man on the moon” speech in 1962, & how you can use these techniques yourself.

Let’s look at some of the things he was up to!

Section

Hypnotic Language Patterns

[Paragraph 3] “We meet at a college noted for knowledge, in a city noted for progress, in a State noted for strength, and we stand in need of all three, for we meet in an hour of change and challenge, in a decade of hope and fear, in an age of both knowledge and ignorance.

JFK sets the frame for his entire speech here: it’s going to be about knowledge, progress & strength. He also ties these three ‘values’ together, nesting one inside the other (knowledge is a function of progress, which is a function of strength).

[Paragraph 3] “…and we stand in need of all three, for we meet in an hour of change and challenge, in a decade of hope and fear, in an age of both knowledge and ignorance.”

The word “for” makes this a cause effect statement ie. we need knowledge, progress & strength BECAUSE we meet in an hour of change & challenge etc. Calling it an “hour” of change etc also starts shrinking the time frame, creating a sense of immediacy & urgency. The list of qualities (change, challenge, hope, fear, knowledge, ignorance) paces people’s experience.

[Paragraph 5] “No man can fully grasp how far and how fast we have come, but condense, if you will, the 50,000 years of man¹s recorded history in a time span of but a half a century. Stated in these terms, we know very little about the first 40 years…”

Awesome! JFK invites people to shrink the last 50,000 years into a 50 year period…

[Paragraph 6] “Last month electric lights and telephones and automobiles and airplanes became available. Only last week did we develop penicillin and television and nuclear power, and now if America¹s new spacecraft succeeds in reaching Venus, we will have literally reached the stars before midnight tonight.”

…then increases the sense of urgency by showing people how quickly things are changing (remember “progress”?) then pointing at what’s possible! As human beings, our sense of time is very important, & is one way to create massive changes of frame. And of course, the idea of reaching the stars is a powerful metaphor, as well as having this literal connection to the space program.

[Paragraph 8] “So it is not surprising that some would have us stay where we are a little longer to rest, to wait.”

He paces the people in the audience who want things to pause & rest…

[Paragraph 8] “But this city of Houston, this State of Texas, this country of the United States was not built by those who waited and rested and wished to look behind them. This country was conquered by those who moved forward--and so will space.”

Then hits them with a But-Flip, & reframes waiting as looking backwards, & not-waiting as moving forward & conquering (notice how he uses the power of three, 1) this city, 2) this state, 3) this country in a similar way he used it before (college/city/state), but now he’s chunked up to the level of “country”). Also, space as something to be “conquered” – now it’s a battle, just like the creation of the USA was.

[Paragraph 9] “William Bradford, speaking in 1630 of the founding of the Plymouth Bay Colony, said that all great and honorable actions are accompanied with great difficulties, and both must be enterprised and overcome with answerable courage.”

The Quotes pattern – when you say something attributed to someone else, it’s them saying it, not you. And who’s saying it? One of the founding fathers of America. Having already drawn the comparison (we’ll conquer space in the same way we’ve conquered this country), this is a highly credible person to quote. He also implies that conquering space is a great & honourable action that must be overcome.

[Paragraph 9] “…all great and honorable actions are accompanied with great difficulties, and both must be enterprised and overcome with answerable courage.”

By the way, actions, difficulties, & courage are examples of nominalisations, which are very trance inducing when you use three or more of them in a sentence. They’re big favourites in “corporate values” statements, like honesty, integrity, shareholder value, customer loyalty, etc.

I’m not going to go through the whole speech this week, but I strongly encourage you to read it in full (you can listen to it too). There are numerous examples of hypnotic language & some very cool reframing (maybe we’ll look at that in a future tip on “sleight-of-mouth”).

My purpose for showing you this has been to demonstrate how “normal sounding” hypnotic language can be. This speech is one of the most famous in the world; famous not for its use of hypnotic language, but for its power. But where does that power come from? The skilful use of language to guide people’s experience. That’s hypnotic language.
