This Week's Tip...Language
for Results - Part 1 - Achieve Goals
As human
beings, language is one of the most powerful tools we have for shaping
information & action for achieving results. The language we use has a massive
effect on whether we achieve certain goals or miss the target. In this article,
I’ll reveal some of the most effective tools relating to your achieving goals.
What do
you want?
OK – we’ll
start with the basics. This is the ultimate NLP Coaching question. What do
you want? You'd be amazed how often people haven't even thought about it
before. Just as frequently, people will answer the question by saying what they
don't want. While that can be useful information, it's good to get them
to state their goals in the positive (remember, you can't not think of a pink
elephant). And once you've helped them discover what they do want, the next step
is to find out how they'll know they've got it - their evidence of success.
1) With relation to
some aspect of your life, ask yourself “What do I want?” The response range from
detailed & specific (eg. a cup of coffee) to broad & general (Eg. inner peace)
and all points in between.
How will
you know you've got it?
When
someone has a goal, it's important to find out what their evidence of success
will be. This question gets them to do a future mind-read of themselves. "I want
to be rich." How will you know you're rich? “Because I’ll have
time to spend six months bird-watching in New Zealand.” You can get the
unconscious more involved by asking this: What will you see, hear and feel
when you've got what you want? The more vividly a goal is imagined, the
more the unconscious can help achieve it.
2) With relation to
the ‘goal’ you identified in step 1, ask yourself “How will I know I’ve got it?”
You might even like to add “What will I see, hear and feel when I’ve got what I
want?”
Where,
when and with whom do you want [what you want]?
It's
important to put goals in a context. Where, when and with whom do you want to be
assertive? Sometimes people say they want something all the time and everywhere,
but they haven't thought it through. "I want to be full of energy." Where,
when and with whom do you want this? "All the time!" You can come up
with a counter-example if necessary. All the time? Even when you're getting
ready to go to sleep?
3) With relation to
the ‘goal’ you identified in step 1, ask yourself “Where, when and with whom do
you want this?”
These are
some of the questions used in NLP to establish what’s called a “well-formed
outcome”. When an outcome is “well-formed” you’re more likely to get it.

projects in the year 2000, so my decision to take the

ways:

then putting it into practice
2) Trying things, making mistakes, & learning by hard (&
often painful) experience.
3) Changing my beliefs & patterns of thought to those of
successful entrepreneurs.
Of these three approaches, the third was by far the most
powerful & effective. Why?
Because when you think like a successful person, you
take successful actions & get successful results.
The workshop was my opportunity to pass on what I’ve
discovered, & the specific approaches I’ve used to
change my beliefs (and those of my clients) to create
success.
