Last
week we hooked into the power of emotion to make your ideas sticky. This
week we’re going to look at the final stickiness master-key. The secrets of
how to create compelling stories.
Human
beings love stories. Back when I first decided to become an NLP trainer, I
said to myself “You have to learn to master stories.” You see, at the time I
didn’t see myself as a storyteller, & used to tell myself that I didn’t know
any stories. So I took an index card, & wrote “I am a master storyteller” on
it, & I put it in my pocket. Each day, as I waited for the train on my way
to work, I’d look at the card & read its message. And I took action too. I
bought a leather-bound journal, & made a list of all the stories I’d ever
heard that I’d liked, or that had a powerful message (or both). I thought of
all the experiences I’d ever had, & asked myself “How could your experiences
form the basis of entertaining & interesting stories?” And I started telling
stories, whenever I was with people, & noticing the effects they had. One
day, I was running a teambuilding workshop, & one of the delegates came up
to me afterwards & said “You’re a brilliant storyteller – I wish I had the
gift like you do.” Suddenly it hit me – I’d become a storyteller.
Just
to remind you: in Dan & Chip Heath’s superb book “Made to Stick”, they
reveal the master keys to making your messages & ideas “sticky”, so people
will pay attention to them, understand them, act on them & pass them on:

Simplicity –
They convey something in a way that is simple & straightforward.
·
Unexpected –
They use surprise, interest & curiosity to get & keep attention.
·
Concrete –
They connect with what we can see, hear, feel, smell & taste.
·
Credible –
They are believable (testable against your own experience, if possible).
·
Emotional –
They connect with us on an emotional level.
·
Stories –
Stories resonate deeply with human neurology – they’re the ultimate delivery
system for ideas.
So
without further ado, here are my top tips for creating compelling stories.
1.
Make a list
of stories you’ve heard & from your experience, & practice telling them to
people (stories from your personal experience generally have even more
impact than borrowed ones, as long as they’re interesting & engaging).
2.
Have a
communication goal in mind for the person/people you are telling the story
to. What do you want & how will you know you’ve got it?
3.
Pay attention
as you speak & notice the response you’re getting. If you don’t like the
response, change ‘direction’.
4.
Make sure
your stories have a beginning, middle & end.
5.
Use rich,
sensory language to activate all five senses.
6.
Write out
stories to tune them & ‘wire them in’.
7.
Use details
to bring your stories to life so they engage people & make them enter fully
into your ‘reality’.
8.
Use symbols
to activate deep cultural meanings. Here are some examples of symbols in
western culture:

9.
Choose
stories that you think are likely to be relevant / interesting to your
audience. (Eg. I will typically start out by telling business audiences
business-related stories & metaphors).
10.
Build
movement & drama using suspense, mystery, shock or surprise. Use your body &
voice expressively to intensify the emotions in your story. Give people an
emotional experience, & they’ll remember your story!
By the
way, three and a half years ago, my marriage ended, & I found myself aged
40, single, facing a lonely existence. I’d never been any good at “the
dating scene” when I was younger, & now I was older, plumper, & with my
confidence at an all-time low. Just a few years later, I love flirting, &
can communicate confidently with women in a way that sparks & builds
attraction. I have a love-life that would have seemed impossible to me just
a few years ago. More importantly, I have a sense of purpose, authenticity &
mature masculinity that I knew was missing in the past, but couldn’t have
put a name to.
