Last
week was the last in our series of tips on how to make your ideas “sticky”.
Today, we’re going to start exploring some of the stickiest ideas they are:
beliefs. In fact, beliefs are so sticky that people forget to remember that
they’re just ideas. In this article, I’m going to reveal the curious nature
of beliefs, & start giving you some ideas about how to shift them if you
want to.
I’ve
been editing the next Salad video release, a demonstration of Sleight of
Mouth, a set of conversational belief change patterns & tools. At the start,
I invite the participants to “Think of a belief that you’ve perceived
as having limited you until now.”
We’ve
all heard about so-called “limiting” beliefs. You may even have identified
some of your own. But when I was being trained by Chris Hall (NLP
Meta-Master Trainer & Ultimate Wordsmith) last year, she said something that
floored me. I was talking about a “limiting belief” I had been having
trouble with, & she asked: How have you been perceiving this as a
limitation until now?
She
explained to me that, in her opinion, there are no limiting beliefs; there
are just beliefs which we perceive as limiting. She went on to
remind me that, from an NLP perspective, every behaviour has a positive
intention, & all our processes can be viewed as resources in some context.
This was a bombshell. My so-called “limiting” beliefs were actually valuable
resources.
The
funny thing is, I’ve been doing reframing for years. I know that every
behaviour is useful in some context. But somehow, when it came to “limiting”
beliefs, I thought the rules were different. So it’s time to reclaim the
word! From now on, when you hear someone talk about “limiting” beliefs,
start to think in terms of “beliefs they’ve been perceiving as having
limited them until now”.
I know
this is a mouthful, but it carries with it some valuable presuppositions:

Beliefs are
perceptions
·
The idea of a
belief limiting someone is a perception
·
The belief
can be re-directed, to open up possibilities while remaining true to it’s
positive intention
·
Things are
going to be different from now on
I
often say that if a person’s having a battle with themselves, someone’s
going to lose, & it’s them. But when it comes to “limiting beliefs”,
I realised I’d been battling with myself on a variety of fronts.
It’s
time to stop battling.
Over
the weeks to come, we’re going to be exploring a variety of ideas for
helping you get more flexibility with your beliefs, & learn the tools for
doing belief-change with others.
If you
have some beliefs that you’ve been perceiving as having limited you until
now, then this would be a good time to write them down on paper. You can
refer back to the list in the weeks to come as we explore ways to make
changes & open up greater possibility.
1)
Make a list of beliefs you’ve been perceiving as limitations
until now.
These
typically take the form of “I can’t do x” or “I could never do y” etc. If
you have been having trouble identifying them, think of something you’d
really love to do, have or experience, then ask “How is it that I haven’t
got this yet?” You may find an “I can’t…” coming to the surface.
It’s a
really good idea to write these down on a sheet of paper or in a word
document, because this has some useful effects:

It starts
encoding these beliefs differently in your neurology (writing something uses
different mental maps to when it’s just rattling round in your head)
·
It
externalises them. Once you’ve written something down, you can perceive it
from a different perceptual position to when you’re just thinking about
them.
·
Patterns may
begin to emerge. Often, when you write beliefs down, you start to see
similarities between them.
2)
Ask yourself “What is it that all these beliefs have in
common?”
We
want to group the beliefs together. That way, making changes to one belief
will affect all of them. Cool huh?
