The
last secret of belief-busting I revealed was an initial look at some of the
“Sleight of Mouth” patterns I use to do conversational belief-change. One of
the givens of psychological change work seems to be “there will be beliefs”,
but in this week’s article, I’m going to reveal a method for going “beyond
belief”.
A few
years ago, I was the warm-up act for a speaker I’d never seen before called
Richard Wilkins. When I was introduced to a grey-haired man with shining
eyes & a wide smile wearing a bright yellow badge that said “I’m there” on
it, I was instantly on my guard. But when he stood up and started telling
his story I changed my mind just as quickly. Richard’s got it. Like the
badge says, he’s “there”.
What
does he mean by “I’m there”?
Have
you ever heard someone say “I’ll get there one day.”?
Richard’s there. In fact, we’re all there – we just think we’re not.
I’ll
explain. We live in a marketing & PR environment that is constantly sending
us the message that we need x, y or z in order to be happy / secure / loved
etc. This messaging is so persistent (& sometimes subtle), that it seems
like this idea is common sense:
“I’ll
be happy when I get _____”
But
it’s a lie. It doesn’t really work. Either we avoid getting what we want (so
we don’t have to discover that the idea is an illusion) or we experience the
“9-day wonder”, where something we’ve wanted for years only satisfies
temporarily.
And
the solution? Be happy now.
“But
that’s not as easy as it sounds!” I hear you say. I agree. In fact, I’ve
been researching this for years, & produced a variety of products along the
way. Then, a few months ago, I did a programme with Richard & his partner
Liz Ivory called
Broadband Consciousness & I discovered “the next level” for being happy
now.
Here’s
the central premise in a nutshell:
a) In any
situation, if you could choose between feeling happy / positive /
resourceful, or feeling unhappy / negative / unresourceful, which would you
choose?
For
most people, the answer is simple: given the choice, they would choose
happiness.
b) If you chose
happiness, yet you have times when you feel powerless, unresourceful or
unhappy, then there’s only one conclusion: when you’re not feeling good,
it’s not you that’s choosing.
So if
you’re not choosing, who is? The Script.
The
Script is a
collection of mental & emotional habits that’s been built up over centuries,
& that you’ve been learning since before you can remember. The Script
is a story about you: who you are, what you’re capable of, about your world,
and your place in it.
The
Script has been
developed by well-meaning people. It’s been passed on from generation to
generation, & added to along the way. Here are some of the people &
institutions that have worked on The Script:

As you
may already be aware, only about 5% of our actions each day are chosen
consciously. The rest of them are conducted automatically by the unconscious
mind. This is a good thing. Lots of what we do is optimised by the fact that
it’s done automatically. However…
Many
of our thought patterns run automatically too. When they’re thoughts that
make us feel good / resourceful / positive & capable, that’s great. But when
our thoughts are perceptions of limitation, lack & not-enough-ness, that’s
not so helpful.
Don’t
get me wrong – all our thought patterns were created to help us at some
point in time, but many of them have outlived their usefulness.
The
answer?
1)
Notice when
you’re in The Script
2)
Say
“thank-you” to it
3)
Remember that
The Script is not you. It’s just an idea.
What
effect will this have?
In the
short term, maybe not that much. But in the long term, the effect can be
massive.
I
