Last
week we looked at how you can win at the game of life. This week we're going
to explore a technique that you can use in any situation to change the way
you feel. And when you use this over time, it will deepen the rapport &
connection between your conscious & unconscious minds. In this article,
you're going to discover the simplest powerful NLP technique I know, period.
Last
night I was doing a workshop for women, Better Relationships from the Inside
Out. I asked the group to think of something that put them into a slightly
unresourceful state, something that annoyed or irritated them. Once they'd
thought of something, I invited them to notice any images, sounds or
feelings, then say “thank-you” inside their minds. Then I asked them to
notice how they were already responding differently. People instantly
started relaxing & reporting feelings like warmth, peace & calm in their
bodies.
Every behaviour has a positive intention
You
may have heard the NLP idea that every behaviour has a positive intention.
My way of thinking about this is that all behaviours are purposeful, they
have some kind of goal they are trying to achieve. This doesn't just go for
behaviours in the big sense of the word (ie. kissing, eating, drinking,
exercising, playing, smoking, laughing, fighting etc.) It also applies to
what we might call micro-behaviours, for instance:
·
Feeling
·
Believing
·
Thinking
·
Blinking
·
Gesturing etc
Human
beings are not random. All that we “do”, from the macro to the micro is
purposeful.
Which
gets us where?
Well,
you can think of a feeling or a thought-pattern as a communication from the
unconscious mind. It's been trying to tell you something, to convey some
information. When you try to fight it, you feed it energy. When you resist
its message, it comes back stronger.
The
great psychotherapist Fritz Perls used to say “What you resist persists.”
My
friend Ian Watson says “What you resist persists, but what you accept
dissolves.”
Acceptance is the price of freedom
When
you say “Thank-you” to a thought-pattern or feeling, you're acknowledging
it, letting it know that its managed to get your attention. This will often
cause an immediate relaxation. Then you can explore more deeply. Ask the
thought-pattern or feeling what its purpose has been – why has it been
trying to get your attention. Here are some questions you can ask:
·
Why have you
been trying to get my attention?
·
What purpose
have you been trying to achieve?
·
What gift
have you been trying to give me?
All of
this against a backdrop of “Thank-you”.
Of
course, when you first say “Thank-you” you may get some internal objections.
These are often along the following lines:
·
Why am I
saying thank-you to something that's “bad”?
·
If I say
thank-you to this, won't it take control of me?
·
If I accept
myself, I'll just sit around watching TV & eating cakes all day!
If you
should happen to experience objections, just say “Thank-you” to them too –
after all, they're expressions of your own neurology, & there's no benefit
in fighting yourself. If you fight yourself, someone's going to lose, & its
you!
As you
practice saying “thank-you” to yourself in the days & weeks ahead, you'll
continue to deepen the rapport between your conscious & unconscious minds, &
experience greater freedom.

"Imagine Really Enjoying Public Speaking, & Feeling Great As You Captivate Your
Audience"
Save £600 on
NLP Trainer Training!
Eight years ago,
I attended my first NLP Training, & I was truly amazed. You
see, I'd been working in the corporate world for years, where people did hours
of intensive preparation to stutter their way through dull powerpoint
presentations (at the time, I was deathly afraid of public speaking). But on
that morning in 1998, I was able to see a new possibility. My trainer
walked calmly out in front of 100 people, leaned against the back of a chair, &
proceeded to entrance us with fascinating stories & amazing demonstrations of
expertise. He held us spellbound for hours, & we took away skills,
understandings & possibilities which have stayed with me to this day. I didn't
know then that I was actually destined to become an NLP Trainer,
but I did make a vow to myself. I said
"You
have to learn how you can engage an audience like that."
•
I loved the idea of being able to feel relaxed & confident in front
of a
group, radiating charisma & positive energy. I'd had enough
of feeling
nervous & awkward. I wanted to learn how to to really
shine.
•
I imagined myself being able to captivate people, & delight them
with enthralling stories & fascinating explanations.
•
I was entranced by the idea of having extraordinary skills that
would allow me
to achieve near-magical effects with people,
using only my
words & my gestures.
•
I was inspired to help people learn life-changing skills at a deep
level,
& really be able to see their training discoveries show up in
their lives. I'd
been on too many training courses that never made
good on what they promised. I
wanted to be a trainer that really
makes a difference in people's lives.
•
I dreamed of being able to earn a living doing work that really
makes a
difference, doing something I really love. The mental
image of being
able to touch people's lives kept coming back
again & again.
•
I was inspired by the idea of being a trainer & speaker who
people talk
about, & remember for the rest of their lives.
•
I could really see the value of having an incredibly enjoyable,
portable, in-demand skill that I can take with me wherever I go.
I
was so inspired by that experience, that I decided to train as an NLP
Practitioner, & ended up doing Practitioner, Master Practitioner & Trainer
Training several times with different organisations. Let me explain. I've got a
list of people I've wanted to train with for years. Each year I spend some time
renewing & developing my skills with one of the people from the list. A name has
been on my list for several years, & in May 2006 I got the chance to
experience her genius, first-hand. To give you an idea...
• She started her own training in NLP in 1977, with co-originators
Bandler and Grinder, & became one of the first trainers of NLP
in 1980 (she's been training NLP for over 25 years, & is
recognised as one of
the most highly skilled NLP Trainers in the
world).
•
She collaborated
with Richard Bandler for 10 years
(5 of them
as his apprentice & protege). During
that time, their
collaborations produced many of the most well-known
developments of NLP, including Submodalities, The Swish
Pattern, The Compulsion Blowout Technique & many others.
• In fact, Bandler made her a
Meta-Master Trainer of NLP, to
acknowledge her extraordinary ability, artistry & contribution to the
field.
• In addition, she was
instrumental in the creation of many of the
Sleight
of Mouth patterns, the most powerful tool there is for
conversational
belief change (I'm good at Sleight of Mouth, but
she is astonishing!)
• She is a licensed psychotherapist, a Certified Hypnotherapist, &
holds a
Doctorate in Psychology and Neuro-Semantic
Linguistics.
• She is most well-known for her
incredible expertise in the areas
of
language & time, & is the creator of Neuro-Systemic
Linguistics. She is
'the language master', & the person who I am
continuing to develop my linguistic
skills with as her student. She
is quite literally "the trainer's
trainer"

The person I'm talking about is Christina Hall,
Ph.D & NLP Meta-Master
Trainer.
I travelled to California this summer to participate in language
training with Christina for the first time, & she knocked my socks off. I went
expecting a lot, but what I experienced blew me away. Christina is without doubt
one of the finest trainers, & most highly-skilled NLP-ers I've ever experienced.
Her encyclopaedic knowledge & technical brilliance is only exceeded by her
compassion & respect for the individual.
I
feel very privileged to announce that Christina Hall has agreed to deliver NLP
Trainer Training to Salad's clients.
"[Christina Hall is...] the person who
has probably taught me more about NLP... and who continues to prove there is no
end to this field." -
Richard Bandler, NLP Co-Developer
