Last week we explored the idea that you can transform your life in 90 days.
Of course, it doesn't have to take that long. In this article, I'm going to
show you how you can use “time language” to make powerful changes instantly.
In
April, I did a brief coaching session during an NLP Techniques Masterclass,
where I demonstrated 'Sleight of Mouth', a set of powerful linguistic tools
for transforming beliefs conversationally. Jill, the woman I was working
with had a belief which had been limiting her (she believed she could have a
successful business, but didn't believe she could do it on her own, without
a business partner).
I
explored the structure of the belief, then asked her one of my favourite
questions, “How would you know if this weren't true?”
The
reason I like this question is because it gets a person to imagine the
circumstances where they believe something different, a more empowering
belief. But the answer she gave me was one I hear quite a lot. She said
“Because I'd have the physical evidence”.
When people have something in mind that they want, but there's a belief
they've perceived as limiting them, & you ask how they'd know if it wasn't
true, their logical mind says “Because I'd be getting what I want.”
So
I tried a different tack, & asked a question which had such a powerful
response that I've been using it ever since. This is what I asked her:
“How would you know, even before you had the evidence to support it, that
this belief has already changed?”
This is a very powerful question, so let's look at it in chunks:
“How would you know...”
-
This makes the
question “theoretical”, so it's safe to answer
-
It invites the
listener to mind-read themselves in the future
“...even before you had
the evidence to support it,...”
-
This
invites them to imagine the point in time when the evidence to support
the belief has arrived, then...
-
Back up
in time to a point BEFORE the evidence has arrived, but AFTER the belief
has changed
“...that this belief has
already changed?”
This
pattern was incredibly powerful – it gave Jill access to the piece of
information which we used for the rest of the session to change her belief.
I was
delighted, so I've been using the pattern ever since. You can experiment
with it for yourself.
1)
Identify some belief you've been perceiving as limiting
you until
now, some kind of “I can't...”.
I recommend
you choose something that matters to you, where changing the belief would
make a big difference in your life.
2)
Thank the belief, & acknowledge that it's had a positive
intention, a
purpose for existing.
3)
Ask yourself “How would I know if this weren't true?”
Whatever
answer you come up with, say “Thank-you”.
4)
Ask yourself “How
would I know, even before I had the
evidence to
support it, that this belief has already
changed?”
You may get
some big shifts in your mind & body as your brain processes the answers to
this question. You can run all your limiting beliefs though this & notice
the powerful results you start experiencing.
