Hello everyone, welcome to this week’s newsletter & to the 208 new subscribers who have joined us this week (to see previous tips, go to http://www.saladltd.co.uk/archive.htm).

In the run-up to the UK’s recent general election, the Conservative party ran a surprising advertisement. Surprising, that is, to anyone with an understanding of human neurology and hypnotic language. The advertisement showed a picture of Tony Blair (leader of the Labour party) with a slogan saying “Imagine five more years of him”.

I know that their intention was to communicate a kind of “oooh, won’t it be horrid to have silly old Tony in office for another term”, but the unconscious mind processes commands directly. Up and down the country, thousands of unconscious minds obediently imagined Tony Blair being in office for the next five years. When they went to the polls, people made the choice that fit with what they imagined. Blair and his party were re-elected.

So am I saying that this one Conservative party ad swung the election in Labour’s favour? Of course not. But am I saying it had an effect? Absolutely.

The unconscious mind is obedient. One of my favourite hypnotic language patterns is “What happens when you imagine...?” It’s very powerful in coaching, training, and other influence situations.

- What happens when you imagine being able to do this easily?

- What happens when you imagine feeling good in this situation?

- What happens when you imagine having put this problem behind you?

In order to make sense of the question, the person has to imagine doing it. And when you imagine doing something, you’re one step closer to doing it for real.

I guess the Conservative party’s ad agency didn’t know this.

1) Identify some things that you’d like other people to do.

Whether you want a client to resolve one of their problems, a subject to go into a trance, or a friend to feel good for no good reason, it doesn’t matter. If you’re having trouble thinking of someone or something, stop for a moment.

What happens when you imagine already having chosen just the right person or situation?

2) What could you get them to imagine that will get them a step closer to doing what you want them to do?

Do you want them to imagine going on holiday, relaxing deeply, or buying an ice-cream?

3) Create a question using the “What happens when you imagine...?” form.

- What happens when you imagine relaxing easily?

- What happens when you imagine lying on a beach, with the sun shining down on you from a clear blue sky?

- What happens when you imagine getting that new job?

Then, get into rapport with the person and ask them the question. You may be surprised at the results you get!

This can be a very useful response when someone says “I can’t”. For example:

A: I can’t learn to drive.

B: OK. What happens when you imagine learning to drive easily?

A: It’s really good! Etc.

I’m not saying this will instantly get someone to overcome a can’t, but it does start moving them in the right direction.
