This Week’s Tip

Hi everybody, & welcome to [ x ] new subscribers who have joined us this week.  Last week, we looked at some of the things you can do with pictures (if you missed last week’s tip, see The NLP Tip Archive.)  This week we’re going to go through a way to help yourself to do the things you want to get done, but haven’t been getting around to.

 

A few months ago, I realised that I had allowed my email inbox to grow to 700 messages stretching back several months.  Shocking I know.  There were people who had emailed me ages ago & I just hadn’t responded.  I decided that something had to be done about it, but not just once. It wasn’t a matter of clearing out the inbox, but a matter of keeping it clear.  So I used the NLP New Behaviour Generator.

 

New Behaviour Generator (NBG)

The New Behaviour Generator is a quick & easy way of building a strong motivation for a desired behaviour.  Find a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted for a few minutes, then do the following…

 

1)      Identify a task you’d like to get done, but don’t necessarily enjoy doing.  It could be some administrative task, a type of exercise, tidying up or anything else you choose. 

 

2)      Sit back & relax, with your eyes looking up & to the right (or to the left if you’re left-handed.)  See a person who looks just like you, close by.  See that ‘future you’ having just completed the task, & see how it looks with the task already done.  Notice the results of having it done, & all the benefits that arise from that (immediately & in the future.)

 

3)      Then, watch that ‘future you’ doing the task easily & enjoyably.  Notice that as that ‘future you’ does the task, they keep looking at the image of themselves having completed the task.  Every time they look at the task, they get a good feeling of anticipation, & hear positive & encouraging internal voices.  See how good that ‘future you’ feels about the progress they’re making, then see them having a sense of joy & pleasure at having successfully completed the task, & enjoying the benefits.

 

4)      Does this ‘version’ of the future look like something you’d like to experience?  If not, just allow a gently swirling whirlwind to descend over the images.  The whirlwind is a symbol of transformational change, so you can allow your unconscious mind to make whatever adjustments are necessary to make the representation right for you.  When your unconscious mind has made the necessary adjustments, the whirlwind will clear, & you can see the whole process for that ‘future you’.

 

5)      Do you want to be that future you?  If not, repeat steps 3 & 4, fine tuning the benefits, ensuring the various internal representations are attractive to you & employing the wisdom of your unconscious.  Once you have a ‘future you’ you’re happy with, allow that ‘future you’ to move into you (into your chest, your head or your whole body) bringing all those learnings with them (use your hands to pull them in if you wish to.)

 

6)      Identify when you’re next going to do the task, & see yourself doing it, easily & enjoyably.

 

 

The eyes have it

You may have heard of ‘eye accessing cues’ or seen the standard NLP eye-accessing diagram (a smiley face with arrows coming out of the eyes.)   The originators of NLP noticed that when people used visual words relating to their future, they often looked up & to the right.  A scan of neurological research revealed that there’s a relationship between eye movements & neural processing, & that moving your eyes up can activate eidetic imagery (fancy words for ‘making pictures in your head’.)  This has in turn led to Richard Bandler coming up with the idea of time lines, which ended up spawning a whole school of therapy.

 

When you make an image of yourself & place it in your ‘future’, it works almost like a placeholder in a diary (when you get to that time, do this.)  When you combine this fact with the knowledge that you can find ways to enjoy something by imagining how good it will feel when it’s done, you have a way of generating new behaviours.

 

7)      The NBG takes a few minutes to do, but you can get amazing results from it.  Once you’ve had the experience of successfully using the NBG, take a few minutes to repeat the process, choosing the NBG as the task you’d like to motivate yourself to do.  This is the Meta-NBG, & is very powerful indeed!
