This Week’s Tip Hello everyone, & welcome to the [ x ] new subscribers who have joined us this week (to see previous tips, go to The NLP Tip Archive.)
I haven’t written a tip in a few weeks, because I’ve had a lot going on (excuse, excuse!), & I started to think about how I’d managed to create that situation. One of the most well-known NLP ‘facts’ is the idea that you can’t not think of a blue hippopotamus. This is because negation is processed differently by neurology than it is in language. If I say “Don’t smile”, your neurology has to process the meaning of the word ‘smile’ even to understand what I’m talking about. Human beings are goal-oriented; our neurology & physiology are adapted to move towards the ‘ideas’ (pictures, sounds, feelings) we hold in our minds. For this reason, it’s important to be selective about the ‘ideas’ you keep in your mind, because…
You get what you focus on You get what you focus on. If you are unsure what you’ve been focusing on, there’s a quick way to find out: look at the results that have been showing up in your life. On some level, the results that you’ve been getting are a reflection of what you’ve been putting your attention & energy into.
1) Figure out what you’ve been focusing on: make a list of the main results that you’ve been getting in your life.
The results you’ve been getting are an accurate measure of what you’ve been focusing on. If you are flush at the bank & experiencing material wealth, well done! You’ve created that result by focusing on the abundance in your life. If you’re deep in the hole, congratulations! You’ve managed to create that result by focusing your energy & attention on lack of spondulicks. This is how powerful your mind is.
2) Review your list & identify the results you’re most pleased with. Congratulate yourself for having achieved these results.
You may find certain things on your list that you’re really happy are in your life, but that you didn’t make a conscious effort to bring about. Perhaps you have some great friends who you really care about, or a happy relationship. Maybe your health is particularly good, or you experience a deep sense of peace a lot of the time. Whether your conscious of it or not, these are a result of what you’ve been focusing on.
3) Identify the areas where you’d like to change your results.
It may be that there are some areas on the list that you are not yet happy with. Happy or not, these are the results you have been getting, so the first thing to do is…
4) Accept that your current results reflect your current reality.
Your current results are the way it is, but not necessarily the way it will be. Once you accept things as being how they are, then it’s a much easier task to change them to how you’d like them to be. In NLP, we’re invited to “meet people at their map of the world”. Acceptance of your current reality is a quick way to meet yourself at your own map of the world (if you’ll excuse the duality), which is the best place to start for creating something new.
5) Decide how you want it to be.
In each area that you are not yet happy with, decide how you want it to be. If you are single & want to be in a relationship, then that’s how you want it to be. If you’re in the red & you want to be in the black, that’s how you want it to be.
6) Pay attention to your thoughts. Every time you catch yourself focusing on what you don’t want / don’t have, stop & focus on what you do have in that area.
If you want to increase your wealth, every time you catch yourself worrying about bills, focus on the pennies, pounds, dollars or drachmas that you do have (no matter how few.) If you want to get into a relationship, every time you find yourself moping about how your not in one, stop & think about the relationships you do have (or have had). The most useful emotion to access when your focusing on what you wish to increase is…gratitude.
7) Use gratitude to increase the flow.
Gratitude is one of the most powerful ways of increase the flow of good stuff into your life (see NLP Tip 49 - The Manifestation Turbocharger for more details of how to use gratitude).
Business Essentials: In business, you get what you focus on too, & do you think that the underlying beliefs of a business reflect the results you get? Absolutely. You can use this process on anything you want to change in business.
People sometimes say to me “But Jamie, you don’t understand – we’re subject to market forces.” While this may be true, it doesn’t seem to be a very useful thing to believe. After all, the more you focus on being subject to market forces, the more you will be. What would happen if, instead, you decided that the results you’re getting are a function of what you’ve been focusing on as a business? What would happen if you decided to change what you’ve been focusing on?
One of the most powerful things about this approach is that you start to perceive the ways you choose the results you get. And isn’t that what most businesses want?
